Neighbors of a gravel pit on the west side of the valley say they're growing tired of the dust that continuously blows into their yards and homes.

The gravel pit at Spring Mountain and Tenaya was in the neighborhood before residents started building homes in the area, but neighbors say something needs to be done to clear the air.

UNLV closes $50M land deal to expand campus

UNLV has finalized a $50 million deal to expand its campus by 42 acres.

The Las Vegas Sun reported the school closed the deal on the empty parcel north of McCarran International Airport and near the Las Vegas Strip. The sale was announced Wednesday. It's still undetermined what will be built on the land. One option is to build a new stadium there, while another option is creating a campus village.

Stadium proponents want games closer to campus, rather than seven miles away at Sam Boyd Stadium. The parcel half a mile west of the main school buildings is one of the few places the landlocked, urban campus can expand.

Regents who oversee the school have emphasized that it was important to seize the rare opportunity to buy it... Read More

County to vote on new EMS provider

Tuesday, the Clark County Commission is scheduled to vote on a measure that would add a new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) company to serve the valley. It is the first time a vote like this has happened in more than 15 years.

Due to a 10-year franchise agreement that just expired, Henderson-based Community Ambulance has a chance to jump into the EMS market.

The vote is scheduled to happen at 10 a.m.

Company founder and Chief Operating Officer Brian Rogers seems confident the commission will approve the deal.

"It's something we worked for since the day we opened. To us, it's critical," he said.

He says with the commissioners' pending approval, his company will take over approximately 25 percent of Clark County as a primary, private 911 EMS provider.

This covers a chunk of the southeast valley; along the I-15 down to Primm; and McCarran International Airport... Read More

Runnin' Rebels to face off against Aggies at Utah State Tuesday

The Runnin' Rebels will travel to Utah state for a date with the Aggies Tuesday night. The team will face the league's player of the week.

Aggie guard Chris Smith averaged 29 points and 9 rebounds a game, along with two wins last week against the Air Force and Colorado State.

Despite that impressive record, the Rebels have some interesting history with the Aggies. It's crazy history that dates back to the mid-1980's.

City plans to revitalize Maryland Parkway

Maryland Parkway, an area of Las Vegas considered as the regional spine for employment and transit, is being targeted for revitalization.

Planners want to make the road that fronts UNLV while running through some economically challenged neighborhoods, a place of commerce and connectivity.

Maryland Parkway is a vital stretch of road that connects downtown, UNLV and McCarran International Airport, with hundreds of small businesses. Many of those businesses are still caught in the grips of the recession, but government leaders have been trying to figure out how to bring it back to life.

So where should the revitalization start?

A neglected shopping center directly across from UNLV would be a good place to start. Wissam Alsabah opened his Kabob shop in that area two months ago.

He says business isn't exactly booming.

"It's not as safe as it used to be," said Alsabah.

Wissam says Maryland Parkway has seen better days... Read More

Court hearing reset for man in Vegas police officer shooting

A preliminary hearing was postponed for a 38-year-old man accused of pulling a gun and shooting a veteran Las Vegas police officer during what investigators characterized as a chance encounter in an apartment complex.

Prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci said Wednesday that evidence was still being collected and provided to the defense in the attempted murder and battery case against Teag Lanier Fox. A judge reset the date for Jan. 21.

Defense attorney Kyle Cottner didn't immediately respond to messages. Police say 52-year-old Officer Gregory Sedminik is expected to make a full recovery after surgery for wounds to his arm and upper torso stemming from the Dec. 17 shooting south of the Las Vegas Strip.

Fox was arrested several hours later at a golf course community several miles away... Read More
