New McCarran Terminal Nearly Ready to Open

LAS VEGAS -- In what is being billed as the largest capital improvement project since its opening in 1948, McCarran International Airport is preparing to unveil its new Terminal 3 expansion to the world's traveling public on June 27.

At nearly 1.9 million square feet in size, the terminal will be nearly as large as the Sands Expo and Convention Center. From a practical standpoint the $2.4 billion terminal is expected to relieve congestion at existing Terminal 1 by providing additional check-in, baggage claim, security checkpoints and parking.

Multiple Car Crash Sends 6 to Hospital

LAS VEGAS -- The intersection of Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway was closed for several hours overnight following a multi-vehicle crash.

According to Metro, as many as seven cars around 2 a.m collided. One car hit a pole. Officers say speed and reckless may have been a factors.

A total of six people were transported to Sunrise Hospital, including one who is in serious condition.

Terminal 3 By the Numbers

Here are some insights about the new Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport:

* The main terminal building is 2,300 long, equivalent to .44 miles.

* The electrical wire and cable adds up to 284 miles, roughly the distance from Las Vegas to the beaches near Los Angeles.

* There are 8 miles worth of baggage conveyors.

* The terminal had 50,000 building inspections.

* Lengthwise one could fit six football fields, including the end zones, on the south side of the second level.

* The terminal's utility plant can produce enough electricity to power 50,000 homes.

* There will be roughly 300 slot machines in the terminal.

* The terminal's 245,904 cubic yards of concrete would be nearly enough to pave a 4-foot-wide, 4-inch-thick sidewalk from Las Vegas to Oklahoma City.
