Panama Newest Destination for Nonstop Service

 

Nonstop flight service between Las Vegas and Panama will begin in late June via Cope Airlines.

On June 27,  Las Vegas will become Copa Airlines’ seventh destination in the U.S. 

The approximately six-and-a-half-hour flight will depart McCarran International Airport’s new Terminal 3 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 5:37 a.m., arriving at Copa’s Hub of the Americas in Tocumen International Airport in Panama City at 2:36 p.m. The return flight will depart Panama on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 9:54 a.m., arriving in Las Vegas at 2:30 p.m.

“Increasing our accessibility from new and emerging markets will introduce Las Vegas to millions of potential new visitors and help us achieve our goal of 30 percent international visitation over the next decade,” said Cathy Tull, senior vice president of marketing for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Another round of heavy enforcement for intersection safety takes place this week in southern Nevada.

A report released this week by the Alliance for Biking and Walking rated Las Vegas 32nd out of 51 major cities for safety.

The show will hold auditions for model cocktail servers, VIP hosts, bartenders, lifeguards, food runners, cabana attendants, barbacks and seasonal security officers. You'll want to bring your resume and come dressed in your best beach attire for audition photos.

Decisive victories over a pair of conference foes helped the Runnin’ Rebels move up in the national rankings Monday.

UNLV (18-3) jumped two spots back to No. 12 in the Associated Press poll, reclaiming the position it had a week ago before a last-second road loss to San Diego State (17-2.) The Aztecs check in right behind the Rebels at No. 13, a three-spot bump from last week.

The Runnin’ Rebels received a bigger bounce in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, up five places to No. 15. A huge drop followed the San Diego State loss and the coaches love the Aztecs: they’re at No. 12, moving up four spots.

Donating an old cell phone can net you two free tickets to Saturday night’s UNLV basketball game against New Mexico.

Through Thursday and while supplies last, fans who recycle a no-longer-used wireless phone through HopeLine from Verizon at any of the participating Verizon Wireless stores in metro Las Vegas will receive a pair of tickets to the Runnin’ Rebels game versus New Mexico. Official rules available in participating stores or online at www.verizoninsider.com/lasvegas.

Local Skateboarders Rally for Injured Friend

 

Las Vegas skateboarders are working together to help a young man hurt in a shooting at a skate park.

Skaterscentral.com is presenting the Skate for Keaton Benefit competition Saturday. Seventeen-year-old Keaton Belliston was seriously hurt when two men robbed a group of skaters at Mountain Ridge Park in Centennial Hills on January 3. After taking several items from the young men, one suspect took out a gun and shot into the group hitting Belliston.

The competition is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Skate City Indoor Skate Park, 4915 Steptoe Street #100. Skateboarders can enter the competition with an entry fee of $10. Those interested can pre-register at skaterscentral.com or at the door on the day of the event. There will be a $10 entrance fee to the event. All proceeds from the door and competition will go to Keaton Belliston’s family. A portion of the food sales from the event will also be donated.

Gov. Sandoval to Host Barbeque for UNLV Rebels

 

Gov. Brian Sandoval will host a barbeque dinner for the UNLV Rebels in celebration of the men's basketball team seventh straight win last week.

Sandoval is scheduled to host the celebration and fundraiser, along with UNLV President Neal Smatresk, on Jan. 19. Tickets to the barbeque at UNLV's Cox Pavilion cost $100 per person. The deadline to buy tickets is Thursday. The proceeds will go toward the Rebel Athletic Fund.

UNLV won its seventh straight game over Cal State Bakersfield last week. Sandoval graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno.
