3 new West Nile Virus cases confirmed in Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Three more people have tested positive for West Nile virus in Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada Health District reported on Thursday.

The new cases push the total to 5 cases in 2019.

The health district is urging people to use insect repellant and avoid areas where there are mosquitoes. It’s also a good idea to wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes have been found in 25 ZIP codes in Southern Nevada, and the district is also finding mosquitoes that are carrying the St. Louis encephalitis virus.

The cases announced today involve one woman under the age of 50 and two men over 50. One of the men was not displaying symptoms. The woman contracted the neuroinvasive form of the West Nile virus. The other man contracted the non-neuroinvasive form of the virus... Read More

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas police are investigating the stabbing death of a woman Thursday afternoon in a park on West Flamingo Road near Jones Boulevard,

According to Metro police, they received a call regarding a possible overdose in a bathroom around 2:17 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the woman was suffering from stab wounds.

She was transported in critical condition to the hospital, but was pronounced dead. Police are looking for a female suspect. People are advised to avoid West Flamingo Park... Read More

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for central Clark County until 3:30 p.m.

Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain on Interstate 15 just north of Jean. Flash flooding is expected.

The storm is moving north, and could hit the Las Vegas valley.

People in Southern Highlands, Enterprise, Mountain’s Edge and Sloan should be prepared. The National Weather Service also advised caution on I-15 between milemarkers 14-25.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who barricaded himself in a Las Vegas valley apartment Wednesday and made threats in a 911 call is facing a terrorism threat charge.

Guy Nguyen, 32, was taken into police custody just before 10:30 p.m. following a seven-hour standoff with police at an apartment on South Fort Apache Road between Tropicana Avenue and Russell Road. The barricade resulted in a partial closure on Fort Apache Road and evacuations in Nguyen’s apartment complex.

Nguyen allegedly called police and made threats of terrorism. He also posted his threats on social media. Nguyen posted that he wanted to expose the Veterans Affairs system and that there was a lack of resources for people with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries.

And if he wins, he could be even richer. The 2018 SuperContest winner took home $1.4 million. Entrants pick five games each week against the contest line to earn points.

LAS VEGAS – June Scharf was going through the security checkpoint at the MGM Northfield Casino near Cleveland recently when something about the security guards’ uniforms struck her.

“My most immediate thought was, this is a problem,” Scharf said.

The guards were wearing yellow shirts with a six-pointed star. It was a security badge-type image, but to Scharf it evoked imagery of the Holocaust.

“It was a combination that it was a star, and it was on a yellow backdrop,” Scharf said.

Nazi Germany began forcing Jews to wear identifying badges in 1939. In Germany and in many of the countries it occupied, the badges were yellow and in the shape of the Star of David, with the word “Jew” in middle.

Scharf is Jewish, and some relatives on her grandfather’s side were killed in the Holocaust. The image could potentially offend many in the Jewish community, she said... Read More
