Judge Isolates Ex-Con in Las Vegas Child Rape Case

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A judge in Las Vegas has ordered jail isolation for a Southern California ex-convict accused of plotting from behind bars to kill a 13-year-old schoolgirl he's accused of abducting and raping at knifepoint.

Prosecutor James Sweetin said Tuesday that 48-year-old Richard Martin Schlacta plotted with another Clark County jail inmate to attack the girl who said Schlacta attacked her Aug. 28.

A Las Vegas judge on Friday ordered Schlacta held in isolation, with no contact with other inmates, no visitors, and no telephone calls or mail. Schlacta is being held on $1 million bail.

Schlacta's attorney, Mace Yampolsky, didn't immediately respond to messages.

Schlacta faces a preliminary hearing Nov. 21 on charges including kidnapping and child sexual assault that could get him life in prison.
