Las Vegas man charged with attempted murder of police officer

A Las Vegas man is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer after a fight with an Metro Police officer Friday.

According to police, an officer was sent to a Jack in the Box restaurant at Boulder Highway and Russell Road just before 6 a.m. because of a man yelling at the employees.

When the officer arrived, he found the suspect identified by police as Curtis Traupman, 43 of Las Vegas, refusing to leave the restaurant. The officer asked him to leave and he did with the officer following him out.

However, when they got outside, the officer said Traupman became aggressive with him. The officer decided to put the suspect in handcuffs, but instead, Traupman began to fight with the officer. At one point, he was able to knock the officer to the ground and sat on him. Traupman is 6 foot 4 and 240 pounds, while the officer is 5 foot 7 and 160 pounds.

The officer said Traupman tried several times to take his gun from his holster. The officer said that he believed if Traupman could have grabbed the gun the suspect would have killed him.

A witness stepped in and helped pull the suspect off the officer. The officer suffered face and head injuries that required medical attention. The witness also told police that the suspect had threatened to kill the officer.

Because police believe Traupman was intentionally attacking the officer and threatening to kill the officer, they have charged him with attempted murder of a police officer. He is also facing resisting a public officer and battery on a protected person.
