Diabetes Education at Desert Springs Event

 

Preventing and managing diabetes will be the focus of a health festival this weekend at Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center.

The 21st Annual Health & Diabetes Fest will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the hospital lobby, 2075 E. Flamingo Road. This year’s event will be hosted by Ironman Triathlete, motivational speaker and Type 1 diabetic Jay Hewitt.

The Health & Diabetes Fest offers several free screenings and assessments to help people with diabetes better manage it and help others to prevent it. A variety of free and low-cost screenings will be available; all lab work requires eight hours of fasting.

UNLV Offers Free Legal Clinic Saturday

 

UNLV will host a community law day Saturday, giving people a chance to get legal advice for free.

The Boyd School of Law is partnering with nonprofit groups to offer classes in bankruptcy, foreclosures, family court and more. Experts will cover understanding court procedures, requirements for documentation and changes to laws. There will also be some classes offered in Spanish. The classes are free and open to the public. They are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the law school. Anyone who attends the classes may also apply for free legal assistance.

Nominees are being accepted for awards honoring those who champion literature in southern Nevada.

Nominations are open for the 2012 Vegas Valley Book Festival Crystal Bookmark Awards Southern Nevada recognizing an individual and an organization advancing the cause of literature. The submission form can be accessed at www.vegasvalleybookfestival.org/crystal-bookmark/. You also can call 229-5431 for a nomination form.

Nominees must live in southern Nevada, and the call is open until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. The two awards will be presented at the Vegas Valley Book Festival at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the auditorium of the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St.

It’s your summer, love it!

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is offering special anniversary pricing on Camp Foxtail registration as a celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouting. Save $100 on resident summer camp with session prices ranging from $50 to $295.

Camp Foxtail is located in the cool in the cool Spring Mountain Range, just 45 minutes from Las Vegas.

Summer sessions run through August 17 and a 10-day pre-registration is required.  Registration is available at girlscoutsnv.org.

Tickets on Sale for MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

 

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The game will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, December 22. The game will feature the top team from the Mountain West Conference and the fifth pick from the PAC-12 Conference. It will be televised on ESPN.

Tickets are the same price as last year, ranging between $25 and $100. Those prices will be in place until Tuesday, December 1. At that point, prices will increase. Fans can buy tickets by calling 739-3267 or by going online unlvtickets.com or going to the Thomas & Mack Center box office.  

Last year’s game attracted more than 35,000 fans.

Gay Rodeo Association Celebrating 20th Anniversary

The Nevada Gay Rodeo Association celebrates its 20th anniversary this year when it presents BigHorn Rodeo at Horseman's Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road.
