Vehicle Kills Man, Driver Arrested

LAS VEGAS - Metro police are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident near Flamingo Road and Nellis Boulevard.

Police say a male pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk and was struck and killed by a Nissan Altima around 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The vehicle left the scene of the accident. Police later located the driver and arrested him for DUI.

Pre-Registration Opens Wednesday for Government Auction

Pre-registration opens Wednesday for a government surplus auction planned for Saturday.

People interested in buying items at the auction can preview what is on the block and pre-register 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at 4320 Stephanie Street, which is near Dog Fancier’s Park. The auction will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the same place.

The sale will feature surplus items from several government agencies, including McCarran International Airport, UNLV, Clark County and the St. George Police Department. Office desks, computers, vehicles, digital cameras, iPods, watches and jewelry will all be up for auction. There will even be 70 schools busses up for bid. During the preview period, people can view the items for sale.

The vehicle auction will take place both live and online. People who want to bid online can register through the company, TNT Auction, which is handling the auction.

Fatal Accident on Flamingo and Koval

LAS VEGAS-- A fatal accident occurred at 3:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.

Metro officers say evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate the Mitsubishi was stopped in the inside left turn lane of eastbound Flamingo, at the intersection of Koval when it was struck head on by the GMC. The GMC was traveling westbound on Flamingo.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel. The occupants of the GMC were transported to UMC with minor to serious injuries.

The accident shut down all directions in the intersection for several hours. 

This is the 51st traffic related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction this year.

Findlay Prep Star Anthony Bennett Commits to UNLV

LAS VEGAS -- After months of cutting his lengthy list of college options, Anthony Bennett, the Findlay Prep basketball star has committed to UNLV via his twitter account. 

Bennett, ranked the nations seventh best prospect by Rivals.com, tweeted, "Staying out West & will be going to #UNLV next year."

The Runnin' Rebels finished 26-9 last season in Coach Dave Rice's first season.

 

 

Healthy Baby Dropped Outside Desert Springs Hospital

LAS VEGAS -- A healthy baby girl was left in a shopping cart early Tuesday morning at Desert Springs Hospital.

Metro Police received a call at 3:40 a.m. that the baby had been left outside the hospital. Metro's Abuse and Neglect unit currently is investigating into who left the baby. They asking for the parents of the child to come forward to provide more info so they can ensure the baby has a complete medical history to help take care of the child.

"We don't know who surrendered this child. We would like to make sure this is a voluntary surrender and that there isn't a mother out there wondering where her child is and thinking her child is safe with another family member, when in fact that family member may have surrendered this child," said Metro Sgt. Kristine Buist.

Vegas Memorials Planned for Dead Red Rock Hiker

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A brother of an avid hiker found dead in March at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area says a public memorial is scheduled this week in Las Vegas.

Darrell Kirk tells The Associated Press the 5 p.m. Saturday ceremony in a plaza near the Student Union building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will mark Ronald Kirk's involvement in the university history program.

It'll also provide a forum to thank rescuers and volunteers who spent several weekends looking for Ronald Kirk after he was reported missing Jan. 22.

Kirk's body was found March 10 after a fall of several hundred feet in rugged terrain at the popular hiking area about 20 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

The Clark County coroner ruled the death an accident.

Cause of Death Released for Little Leaguer

The Clark County Coroner’s Office released Spencer Melvin’s cause of death Wednesday afternoon.

He died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a thickening of the heart muscle. It is a condition that is usually inherited. The 8-year-old Little Leaguer suddenly collapsed died on his way to a baseball game April 10.

Melvin's family was honored by the UNLV baseball team Wednesday afternoon. The family was on hand as Spencer's brother, Sam, threw out the first pitch at the UNLV game. They said the tribute was very touching.

“It is unbelievable. These guys who memorialized our son ... we're a baseball family, so this meant everything to us,” Bob Melvin, Spencer's father, said.

The UNLV baseball team also wore memorial patches on their uniforms. The patches are being sold to support the family.
