LAS VEGAS  -- The U.S. attorney in Nevada says a 43-year-old German traveler faces a federal drug charge after more than a kilogram of cocaine was found encased in more than 80 plastic pellets in his digestive system when he tried to board a flight from Las Vegas to London.

Christopher Adiegwu was indicted Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas on a possession of cocaine with intent to distribute charge. Arraignment is set for Sept. 9. He could face up to 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine.

Adiegwu was arrested Aug. 17 after he was stopped by federal officers at McCarran International Airport, hospitalized and X-rayed.

Court records identify him as a German citizen and native of Nigeria who was traveling under a visa waiver.
