News

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police identified Steve Chavez, 28, of Las Vegas, as the driver who was involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a teen critically injured.

Officers said the 14-year-old pedestrian was crossing at the intersection E. Hacienda Avenue and S. Topaz Street in an unmarked crosswalk when she was struck by a white pickup truck driven by Chavez Thursday morning.

The teen, who hasn't been identified, was taken to Sunrise Trauma Hospital. Witnesses told police, the driver immediately fled the scene, but they gave police officers a description of the car and the license plate number.

Around 1:30 p.m., Metro Patrol Officers found a white 2001 Nissan Frontier pickup that matched the description of the suspect's truck. Police said the pickup was damaged on the front end, and that damage was "consistent with a pedestrian accident."

When investigators reached out to the person, the truck was registered to a woman told son her son, Steve Chavez, was driving her pickup that morning.

Investigators picked Chavez up and arrested him on one felony count of hit-and-run. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

The collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Accident Investigations Section.
