UNLV Launches Reading Challenge

Thousands of school children from across the Las Vegas valley took part in a huge event Monday to promote literacy.

UNLV Athletics and Superpawn teamed up to bring nearly 7,000 fourth and fifth graders to the Thomas & Mack Center for the Rebel Reading Challenge. UNLV coaches and athletes along with local celebrities all took part.

“It is a chance for elementary students to get really excited about reading, and to partner with out community partners because we know literacy is so important. The other piece about today is to start getting kids on a college campus,” said Dwight Jones, Clark County School District Superintendent.

Students at the participating schools will compete in a 30-day competition to see which class can read the most pages. The winning classes will win trips to UNLV men's basketball games and pizza parties.
