The state held a workshop Friday focused on helping seniors spot scams and prevent them from becoming victims.

Representatives from the Nevada State Contractors Board and the Nevada Health and Human Services Agency talked to seniors at the Whitney Senior Center about the types of scams that are used to target them.

"We want to be proactive in our efforts to show seniors what to look for so we can try to reduce that rate of victimization that we see. When it comes to reports of elder abuse, they say for every one that gets reported, there are five that go unreported. That is probably an underestimate by a large account," Jennifer Turner, with the state contractors board, said.

Organizers gave some simple tips to prevent becoming a victim. First, they suggested people following their instincts. The old saying is true: if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Second, if someone is being very pushy and pressuring you to make a decision that is generally a red flag that something is wrong. They suggest people take time to research and ask questions.
