Coach Tarkanian Honored with Statue

The man who put UNLV basketball on the map was honored by UNLV Wednesday.

Long-time Runnin' Rebels coach Jerry Tarkanian celebrated with family and friends as the university unveiled a giant statue in his honor.

Posting a 509-105 (.829) record at UNLV, he took four teams to the NCAA Final Four, winning the national championship in 1990 in a 103-73 runaway over Duke, still the highest margin of victory in tournament championship game history. 

The sculpture incorporated some of the most noted symbols of the coach's time at UNLV.

"The symbols are my vehicle to communicate, without the ring, that is the symbol of champion, then the ghost chair, then with him with the towel in his mouth. There is nothing more iconic," master sculptor Brian Hanlon said.

The former Runnin' Rebels coach was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

RTC Bus Service for Rebel Football Games Announced

The Regional Justice Center announced the schedule for the bus service that will take fans from the Las Vegas Strip and UNLV campus to Sam Boyd Stadium for the Rebel football games/

The two routes fans can use are Route 602 and Route 601. Route 602 provides express service from the Las Vegas Strip and UNLV Main Campus, with a stop at the new UNLV Transit Center, to Sam Boyd Stadium.

Departures are scheduled every 20 minutes.

Route 601 provides continuous loop service about every 20 minutes from Tropicana Avenue east of Boulder Highway to Sam Boyd Stadium.

The service will run from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday for the Rebels home opener against Arizona. For the rest of the season's schedule, go to rtcsnv.com.

Southern Nevada Students Receive Scholarships

A southern Nevada student is getting help to go to college thanks to a young man who will be playing football at UNLV.

Jared Lebowitz from La Canada Flintridge, California was originally picked to receive a scholarship from pro football hall of famer Warren Moon.

However, Lebowitz was recruited to play quarterback at UNLV. The young man requested the money go to another student, and as a result, Joshua Mayfield of Chaparral High School will now get the scholarship.

He is one of two southern Nevada students getting the scholarship. Carlos Martin from Las Vegas High School is also getting money. The three other students are from Southern California.

The students received the honor during a ceremony at the Luxor Friday.

Pitch Perfect: Stadium Transforms for Soccer Game

The process to turn Sam Boyd Stadium into a perfect soccer pitch started Thursday.

The stadium will host a game between two of the most popular teams in Mexico: Chivas de Guadalajara and Club America El Super Clasico. The game is scheduled for July 3.  

"Club America is the champion, who just won the championship from the Mexican Soccer League within the last two weeks. Chivas is the pride of Mexico, so you have the two top teams from Mexico with soccer for the first time a historic event here in Las Vegas," Tim Luce, the director of Latin Sports at Sam Boyd Stadium, said.

In the past, the game has been played in San Francisco. This is the first time that the game will be played in Las Vegas and some tickets are already sold out.

Tickets in the $28 to $38 range are already gone.

Basketball Players Competing to be King of the Rock

This weekend will give basketball players a chance to start their journey to be called King of the Rock.

Energy drink maker Red Bull will be hosting a one-on-one basketball tournament at Sunset Park Saturday.

It is the qualifying round for a final tournament held on the island of Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay in September. The top two players from Las Vegas will advance.

Only the first 64 players to register will be accepted in the competition. Registration starts at 5 p.m. Competition begins at 7 p.m.

Amateurs and pros can compete but competitors must be at least 16 years old. Players between 16 and 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver.  

The rules are the same as a regulation game, but games only last five minutes.

NBA Announces Plans for Summer League

Some of the top new talent for the National Basketball Association will again be in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League.

The league announced the dates and teams for this year's series of games Wednesday. From July 12 through July 22, 22 teams will play at the Thomas & Mack Center and the Cox Pavilion. The teams will feature eight of the top 10 selections in 2013 draft.

All teams will play a minimum of five games. Following the games on July 16, all teams will be seeded in a single-elimination tournament that will finish with a championship game set for July 22.
