Rebel Football Squad Gets National TV Slots

 

Three national TV appearances await the UNLV football team this year, the Mountain West announced Thursday.

The Rebels open the slate of national TV games by hosting Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 30. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. PT and appear on CBS Sports Network. It will mark UNLV's ninth appearance on CBS SN, including once when it was still known as CSTV.

Two weeks later, head coach Bobby Hauck's squad will host Washington State on Friday, Sept. 14 in a game that will be shown live on ESPN beginning at 6 p.m. PT. The matchup was previously scheduled to take place the following day.

Cause of Death Released for Little Leaguer

The Clark County Coroner’s Office released Spencer Melvin’s cause of death Wednesday afternoon.

He died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a thickening of the heart muscle. It is a condition that is usually inherited. The 8-year-old Little Leaguer suddenly collapsed died on his way to a baseball game April 10.

Melvin's family was honored by the UNLV baseball team Wednesday afternoon. The family was on hand as Spencer's brother, Sam, threw out the first pitch at the UNLV game. They said the tribute was very touching.

“It is unbelievable. These guys who memorialized our son ... we're a baseball family, so this meant everything to us,” Bob Melvin, Spencer's father, said.

The UNLV baseball team also wore memorial patches on their uniforms. The patches are being sold to support the family.

 

Navy Cancels Four-Year Series with UNLV Football

The Midshipmen will join the Big East in 2015, filling their schedule and not leaving room for the Rebels.

Navy has canceled its four-year series with UNLV football, which was scheduled to begin with a game in Las Vegas on Oct. 11, 2014.
