Coach Tarkanian Honored with Statue

The man who put UNLV basketball on the map was honored by UNLV Wednesday.

Long-time Runnin' Rebels coach Jerry Tarkanian celebrated with family and friends as the university unveiled a giant statue in his honor.

Posting a 509-105 (.829) record at UNLV, he took four teams to the NCAA Final Four, winning the national championship in 1990 in a 103-73 runaway over Duke, still the highest margin of victory in tournament championship game history.

The sculpture incorporated some of the most noted symbols of the coach's time at UNLV.

"The symbols are my vehicle to communicate, without the ring, that is the symbol of champion, then the ghost chair, then with him with the towel in his mouth. There is nothing more iconic," master sculptor Brian Hanlon said.

The former Runnin' Rebels coach was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
