Rebel Football Squad Gets National TV Slots

 

Three national TV appearances await the UNLV football team this year, the Mountain West announced Thursday.

The Rebels open the slate of national TV games by hosting Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 30. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. PT and appear on CBS Sports Network. It will mark UNLV's ninth appearance on CBS SN, including once when it was still known as CSTV.

Two weeks later, head coach Bobby Hauck's squad will host Washington State on Friday, Sept. 14 in a game that will be shown live on ESPN beginning at 6 p.m. PT. The matchup was previously scheduled to take place the following day.

Cause of Death Released for Little Leaguer

The Clark County Coroner’s Office released Spencer Melvin’s cause of death Wednesday afternoon.

He died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a thickening of the heart muscle. It is a condition that is usually inherited. The 8-year-old Little Leaguer suddenly collapsed died on his way to a baseball game April 10.

Melvin's family was honored by the UNLV baseball team Wednesday afternoon. The family was on hand as Spencer's brother, Sam, threw out the first pitch at the UNLV game. They said the tribute was very touching.

“It is unbelievable. These guys who memorialized our son ... we're a baseball family, so this meant everything to us,” Bob Melvin, Spencer's father, said.

The UNLV baseball team also wore memorial patches on their uniforms. The patches are being sold to support the family.

All this conference shuffling isn't done just yet.

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Sunday night to 8 News Now's Scott Bemis that Utah State and San Jose State will be joining the Mountain West Conference in 2013.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the switch could become official in the next seven to 10 days.

The move means the conference will have at least 10 schools competing in football in two years and nine in most other sports since Hawaii will be football-only. It's also a sign the Western Athletic Conference is in serious trouble.

Both current WAC schools, the Aggies and Spartans don't have much of a tradition in football, but Utah State has been a force in basketball, Going to the NCAA Tournament in eight of the last 13 seasons.

NBA Summer League Coming Back After Hiatus

 

After skipping a year because of the league lockout, the NBA Summer League returns in July to Las Vegas.

The league will run from July 13-22 at the Thomas & Mack Center and the Cox Pavilion. It was cancelled by the NBA last year as the league lockout of its players during a contract dispute dragged on through the summer.

Tickets for the 2012 NBA Summer League will go on sale at 10 a.m. on June 1. Fans will be able to purchase tickets by calling 739-FANS, through UNLVtickets.com or by visiting any UNLV ticket outlet. A complete schedule of games and broadcast information will be released at a later date.

Four-Game Homestand Opens UNLV Football Schedule

 

The UNLV football team will open its 2012 season with four consecutive home games for only the second time in history, according to the Mountain West schedule released last week. 

Kickoff times and television information will be released by the league in the coming weeks. Note that games are subject to change to non-Saturday dates because of TV considerations. 

The 13-game schedule, which will be played without a bye week, will see the Rebels open with four straight home dates for the first time since 1973 when they were a Division II squad.

Rebels Bounce Back Up to No. 17 in Both Polls

 

LAS VEGAS -- The Runnin’ Rebels continue their yo-yo moves in the national rankings, this week moving up to No. 17 in both polls following two home wins.

UNLV (24-6, 8-4 Mountain West) stands tied for first in the conference along with New Mexico and San Diego State. The Runnin’ Rebels defeated Boise State and Air Force at the Thomas & Mack Center last week.

A Wednesday road game at Colorado State, where the host Rams are 6-0 this year, and the home finale Saturday against Wyoming finish up the regular season schedule for UNLV.

The Mountain West Conference tournament starts March 7 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
