Rough Week Leads to Free Fall in Polls for Rebels

Rough Week Leads to Free Fall in Polls for Rebels

LAS VEGAS – Two road losses last week sent the Runnin’ Rebels tumbling in the national college basketball rankings.

UNLV and San Diego State both absorbed upset losses last week. The Rebels dropped nine slots to No. 20 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll after a 65-45 loss Saturday at New Mexico and a 102-97 overtime loss Tuesday at TCU. The Aztecs fell to the final spot in the poll at No. 25 – from No. 15 – after a 58-56 loss to Air Force.

UNLV shot down 10 spots to No. 21 in the Associated Press poll, while New Mexico checked in at No. 18, marking the Lobos' first ranking this year.

The Rebels (22-6, 6-4) are now two games off the pace of the conference-leading Lobos, sitting in a second-place tie with the Aztecs. Beginning with Wednesday night’s home tilt against Boise State, UNLV has three games remaining before the Mountain West tournament that begins March 8 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Win Over Aztecs Boosts UNLV in Rankings

Saturday’s stirring win against San Diego State propelled UNLV forward once again in the national rankings.

The Rebels moved three places forward to No. 11 in the Associated Press poll released Monday. In its only game this week, UNLV downed the Aztecs, 65-63, building a big second-half lead before holding on late. The Rebels missed moving into the top 10 by just a handful of votes and they remain undefeated (14-0) at home this season. San Diego State held its ground at No. 13.

In the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, the Rebels vaulted five spots to No. 11 while San Diego State fell one place to No. 15.

The game of leapfrog between UNLV and San Diego State in the national college basketball rankings continues.

A 68-66 loss at Wyoming dropped UNLV (21-4) three spots in the Associated Press poll to No. 14, while a perfect week by the Aztecs (20-3) led to a four-spot jump to No. 13. The same movement happened in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, as the Rebels fell three places to No. 16 and the Aztecs rose three spots to No. 13.

The Rebels endured a travel nightmare getting to Laramie, Wyo., during a massive snowstorm in the Rocky Mountains, not arriving until 12:26 a.m. on the day of the game. Coach Dave Rice told 8 News NOW's Chris Maathuis his team did not have its legs and did not play good enough defense to win.

UNLV (20-3) jumped a spot in the Associated Press rankings to No. 11 and leaped two spots to No. 13 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. The AP ranking is the highest the Rebels have sat in the polls in 19 years. The Rebels survived overtime games at Boise State and Air Force last week.

San Diego State fell to No. 17 in both polls after losing on the road to Colorado State on Saturday.

Decisive victories over a pair of conference foes helped the Runnin’ Rebels move up in the national rankings Monday.

UNLV (18-3) jumped two spots back to No. 12 in the Associated Press poll, reclaiming the position it had a week ago before a last-second road loss to San Diego State (17-2.) The Aztecs check in right behind the Rebels at No. 13, a three-spot bump from last week.

The Runnin’ Rebels received a bigger bounce in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, up five places to No. 15. A huge drop followed the San Diego State loss and the coaches love the Aztecs: they’re at No. 12, moving up four spots.
